Thadd stifled a groan.

Pain radiated through his body. He made a quick self-assessment—he had no broken bones, no internal bleeding.

The hard surface beneath him was vibrating, and he opened his eyes.

He was in the empty cargo area of a ship. His ankles and wrists were chained to the floor. He felt the brush of fingers through his hair, and turned his head.

Annora. Thank the auroras.

She was chained to the floor beside him. While he was lying down, she was sitting up, her face pinched, her fingers stroking his hair.

Crushing dread hit him.

The space station. The Sarkan guards. He and Annora had been caught. They were in the gorr-cursed hands of Naberius.

The stroking fingers stopped. “Thadd?”

He looked up.

“Thank the wolves.” She cupped his cheek. “You’ve been out for a while. “

“Are you all right?”

She nodded, but there was a bruise on her cheek and dried blood on her arm.

“I’m fine.” She tapped his cheek. “And I do know the meaning of that word.”

He tried to sit up, more aches and pains erupting. She helped him. They were alone in the echoing cargo hold.

He frowned. “Where the gorr are we?”

“On a ship.”

Okay. This was better than being sliced open on a bench in Naberius’ lab. The Sarkans had clearly stripped them of their weapons and left them with nothing. For a second, he mourned the loss of his sword. He glanced at his forearm and his gut tightened. The Sarkans had even smashed up the comp units fitted into the suits.

Thadd grunted. “I figured the warlord would be cutting us open by now.”

Her fingers entwined with his. “He was there, in the dome. I’m pretty sure he wanted to.”

Thadd swallowed, then reminded himself that he wasn’t alone. The fiercest fighter he knew was with him. And she was good motivation—he’d do anything to save her.

“We were sold out.” Her voice was grim.

He frowned. “What?”

“Betrayed. By Hagen. Naberius knew we were coming.”

Now Thadd sucked in a shocked breath. Hagen? How the gorr had the Talnian pilot fooled them?

“He did it to save his child.” Her nose wrinkled. “It’s not an excuse to sell out people trying to save your entire planet and people, but still…”

“It isn’t the child’s fault, but I will make sure Hagen pays. So many lives are at stake. So, why isn’t Naberius sharpening his tools to make us bleed?” Thadd fought back his dark memories, ones that were coated in slick panic.

“Because Zavir figured we were too dangerous,” she said.

That got a feral smile from Thadd. “Maybe Zavir isn’t as dumb as I thought.”

“We’re en route to be dumped on a moon.”

Thadd stiffened. “Krone?”

“That’s it.”

“Gorr.” He thumped his fist on the metal floor. This was worse than Naberius’ lab.

Annora studied his face. “I don’t know much about Krone. The warlord said it was a dumping ground for Sarkan’s enemies and prisoners.”

“He wasn’t lying. It’s a dangerous, savage moon. The Sarkans don’t let out much information about it. I’ve heard the Zhylaw also dump their failed experiments there.”

Annora muttered a curse.
